Old tires carelessly disposed of in nature

The improper use of the forest as a garbage dump is a recurring problem, including in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. A collection of old tires was discovered in Bad Hersfeld on December 21, 2023.
On the Tageberg, the foresters of the city of Bad Hersfeld recently came across a large pile of used tires that had been carelessly dumped in a forest. In total there were 21 tires that were illegally disposed of.
Forester Niklas Eydt reports: “We only came across this garbage by chance, but unfortunately such finds are not uncommon.” Illegal waste disposal often occurs, especially on steep slopes in the forest. Eydt adds: “Just a few weeks ago we discovered another large amount of old tires.”
The amount of trash in the forests increases especially dramatically when it's time to change tires. Environmental violations seem to occur primarily in the transition to the cold season or in spring, as Eydt reports.
It seems that some people try to avoid the hassle or cost of proper disposal. This happens despite the fact that some car dealerships take back used tires free of charge when buying new tires, as the Salzmann car dealership in Bad Hersfeld confirms. For those who change their tires themselves, there is still the option of disposing of old tires at workshops for a fee of a maximum of seven euros each, as the ADAC explains on its website.
