Used tires consist of many different components and must be disposed of properly. But discarded tires are always carelessly discarded in nature and on other surfaces. Wild dumps are punishable in Germany. That doesn't stop criminals from doing illegal business with the old tires - a disposal scandal that is far too little known.
In the report "How the tire mafia poisons nature", the team of the investigative research format "Full Screen" of the SWR is on the trail of the illegal disposal of used tires. Criminal garbage brokers lure you with low prices at which proper disposal is impossible. Instead of retreading, export, material, chemical or thermal recycling, the tires end up illegally in the countryside, on fallow land, in warehouses or industrial yards - huge amounts of waste that damages the environment.
Only dispose of tires through certified companies
The ZARE initiative, an association of certified waste disposal companies, documents these offenses and publishes them on the website certified-old-tire-disposal.de. For years, the ZARE partners have been committed to professional and sustainable disposal of old tires. Because used tires can be recycled and reused sensibly in the spirit of the circular economy.
How can an unprofessional used tire trade be stopped? "Our wish to the government is to say that only certified waste tire disposal companies are allowed to dispose of waste tires because they can provide proof," says Christina Guth, ZARE network coordinator, in the SWR report. Stricter political requirements could ensure that criminals in the industry are put under control. Tire dealers, car dealerships, garages, communities, municipalities and private individuals already have the opportunity to do a lot for the environment: by disposing of their used tires exclusively through certified disposal companies. Because certified companies sort the tires professionally and direct each one to the most sustainable recycling method or further use.

About the ZARE initiative
The ZARE initiative is an amalgamation of 18 companies organized in the Federal Association of Tire Trade and Vulcanizing Trades (BRV), 16 of which are certified waste management companies. The ZARE partners have set themselves the task of raising awareness of professional tire recycling in Germany. ZARE informs drivers about the environmentally friendly disposal of used tires.
