Disposal of used tires: where to put the worn tires?

Bonn, September 06.09.2022th, XNUMX When the old tires have had their day, drivers should think about professional disposal. Storing tires illegally is a criminal offense and harms nature. Drivers can do a lot for the environment by having tires disposed of by certified disposal companies.

If the profile is worn, drivers have to dispose of the tyres. But how? Used tires must not be disposed of with household waste and since 2003 it has been forbidden to dump tires. The main reason for this is the complex composition of the tires: They consist of many valuable components such as rubber, steel, soot or textiles that have to be disposed of properly and are suitable for recycling.

If used tires are improperly disposed of in nature or on illegal tire dumps, they damage the environment, can pollute the groundwater, attract pests and even cause fires. In addition, the taxpayer ends up footing the bill for the disposal of illegally dumped tires.

Use recycling potential

Aside from the risks of illegal storage, tires are too valuable to be left unused in inappropriate areas. The components of the tire can be sensibly reused.

Various methods are available to the waste disposal industry for recycling or further use of used tires: Tires in good condition are reused as used tires, and suitable carcasses are retreaded. Old tires can also be recycled materially, chemically or thermally. However, in accordance with the Closed Substance Cycle Act, incineration should only be used if the tires are not suitable for recycling.

The recycling of tires is laborious and must be carried out by specialized companies. These manufacture many new products from the old tires. Whether retreaded tires, rubber powder for sports fields and playgrounds, asphalt, wall systems, floor coverings or load securing - the possibilities are almost limitless. With professional tire recycling, resources can be conserved, energy saved and waste reduced.

You can rely on certified disposal companies

The ZARE initiative has existed since 2015 and is committed to reliable, professional disposal of old tires. ZARE currently includes 18 waste management companies and manufacturers of new products made from ELT (End-of-Life-Tyres). The partners of the initiative are certified in accordance with the Waste Management Ordinance and also comply with the disposal criteria of the German Association of Tire Trade and Vulcanisers (BRV). Certified disposal companies have the expertise to carefully sort each individual tire and route it to the appropriate recycling route.

If motorists want to act sustainably, they should always ask their tire dealer, car dealership or their trusted garage where the tires are disposed of and only hand in the tires where they work with a certified disposal company. Of course, motorists can also hand in their tires directly to a ZARE partner in their area. An overview of the ZARE partners in Germany can be found on the website at https://zertifizierte-altreifenentsorger.de/zare-in-ihrer-naehe/.
