Illegal used tire warehouse with 25.000 tires discovered

Bonn, August 13, 2024 An illegal tire warehouse with an estimated 25.000 used tires was discovered on a former company site in Porta Westfalica. The size of the warehouse suggests a commercial background.

No, illegal storage of used tires is not a problem that only occurs in Asia or Africa. Sadly, illegal storage or dumping sites keep cropping up in this country too. Recently, a particularly impressive example was reported: According to WDR reports, an estimated 25.000 used tires are stored on a company site in Porta Westfalica. Given the size of the site, it is clear that this is not just a few drivers trying to avoid paying the disposal fee. Rather, this storage site indicates fraudulent, illegal disposal. Fraudsters drive from dealer to dealer and promise them a bargain. What may seem cheap to the individual dealer at first glance ends up costing twice as much. The fraudster can easily earn a five-figure sum with this approach. However, the tires were not disposed of properly.

This is also the case in Porta Westfalica: Due to the fire hazard, the city has given the owners a short deadline for disposal. Experience shows that this deadline will pass without success. The city or the landlord will then have to pay for the disposal costs.

The good news: The city will most likely send the old tires to a certified disposal company. This company will then sort the tires and send them to the most sensible recycling route. This way, the old tires can be turned into new products such as anti-slip mats, stable mats or tartan tracks.

"The fire hazard, the additional costs and the effort could have been avoided," says Christina Guth, spokeswoman for the ZARE initiative of the Federal Association of Tire and Vulcanization Craftsmen. "Simply dispose of it directly at certified disposal companies. This saves costs and is good for our environment."
