Time for winter tires! What to do with the worn tires?

Bonn, October 14.10.2021, XNUMX For safety-conscious drivers, one thing is clear: summer and winter tires are driven from O to O. Summer tires are the right equipment from Easter to October and winter tires are the safest choice in the other months. Now the change is on again. Do you know what happens to the worn tires?

Around 48 million cars are registered in Germany. Without trucks, there are 192 million tires on the roads alone. Around 50 million of these are changed every year and the old tires are disposed of accordingly. Together with tires from commercial vehicles (including trucks, construction machinery and agricultural vehicles), vans and motorcycles, this amounts to around 580.000 tons per year in Germany.

Tires have not been allowed to be landfilled for a long time. They must be properly disposed of or recycled. As a rule, most motorists care little about what happens to the old rubbers. When changing, the dealer or workshop accepts them. But does he take care of the right way? The ZARE initiative calls on workshops and dealers to dispose of old tires professionally. Every driver can actively help with this.

For you as a customer, the question arises: How do I know whether my dealer will dispose of the tires properly? A first indication is provided by looking at the invoice. The price consists of the new tyre, tire fitting and a disposal fee for the old tyres. If the latter is listed separately, there is a lot to be said for the tires being disposed of in a really sustainable way.

If only a flat rate is noted on the invoice, you can simply ask the dealer or workshop, "What happens to the old tires now?" Anyone who behaves in an environmentally friendly manner and has tires disposed of professionally will be happy to provide information. Sometimes there is also a corresponding entry for disposal on the website of the dealer or the car dealership. If not, there's no harm in asking.

It's amazing what you can do with old tires.

Tire recycling is a proven technology. The worn tires can be completely reused and recycled. Whether retreading, material or thermal recycling - after its first life, every tire can be used without any problems and in a resource-saving manner. Among other things, a new secondary raw material (ELT) is produced from the old tires, which is used for fall protection mats, sports fields, noise protection walls, plant pots or rubber asphalt, among other things. Under no circumstances should the tires be left in nature, where they are a burden on the environment. The municipalities, which then have to dispose of the tires properly, are also burdened.
