Buying car tires used to be a problem for vegan drivers because stearic acid is used in the production of the treads. This is caused by the saponification of vegetable and animal fats and oils - consequently the tire is no longer vegan because it contains an animal product.
Most tire manufacturers use animal-sourced stearic acid, but when researching by a blogger, Michelin and Dunlop both shared that they use plant-based stearic acid. This is obtained from palm oil.
