Suspicion of garbage smuggling: Customs office prohibits used tire import from Switzerland

On February 20, 2023, the Weil am Rhein customs office prohibited a Swiss entrepreneur from exporting around 1.000 used car tires from Switzerland to Germany. The reason: there were doubts about the reusability of the tires. During the customs declaration, it appeared that the tires were to go to a tire trading company, but the address given was for a waste disposal company. The tires were not declared as waste, although they should be classified as such. As the Main customs office Loerrach reported that the tires were damaged and could no longer be used on the road.

As part of a so-called notification procedure, the transfer of waste from Switzerland to an EU country must be approved by the waste authorities of both countries. If the permit is not granted, waste may not be exported.
