ZARE initiative: Demand for a political solution for certified waste tire disposal

Bonn, November 08.11.2022th, XNUMX The ZARE initiative seeks dialogue with politicians: In mid-October, ZARE presented new ideas and proposals for the future of professional and sustainable old tire disposal to the Ministry of the Environment. The goal: Only certified disposal companies should be allowed to collect and sort old tires.

The ZARE initiative was founded in 2015 to raise awareness of professional old tire recycling. At a meeting with the Ministry of the Environment in Bonn in mid-October, the ZARE initiative presented its concept together with representatives of the Federal Association for Secondary Raw Materials and Disposal (bvse), the German Rubber Industry Association (wdk) and the Federal Association of Tire Trade and Vulcanisers (BRV). how the problem of the disposal of used tires in Germany could be tackled: with "certified disposal companies plus".

ZARE's demand is that, in the future, old tires should only be disposed of by specialist disposal companies in accordance with the Waste Management Ordinance (EfbV) with "particular suitability for tire sorting" (EFB plus). This offers many advantages: Certified disposal companies have the expertise to sort discarded tires professionally and to route them to the most sustainable recycling methods - whether retreading, trade, material, chemical or thermal recycling. According to current estimates, more than 90 percent of the used tires could be reused, reused and recycled through professional sorting. Certified waste disposal companies provide evidence for each tire: This can be used to create reliable quantity balances for the future. The problem of the increasing number of illegal tire dumps could be counteracted with “certified waste disposal companies plus” and valuable resources saved through the recycling of used tires.

This EFBPlus model strengthens value creation within Europe, reduces dependency on raw materials, contributes to energy efficiency and ensures that as many tires as possible are recycled. "We are very pleased that the Ministry of the Environment and the Federal Environment Agency have taken the time to examine our request. We have been heard and hope that our ideas will fall on fertile ground," says ZARE network coordinator Christina Guth.

Disposal problem increases

Over 600.000 tons of old tires accumulate in Germany every year. Currently, the legal situation in Germany does not specify any requirements for collectors and disposal companies: many companies only collect used tires and do not sort them professionally. In addition, there is no obligation to provide proof of used tires. For these reasons, illegal waste tire dumps and deposits that harm people and the environment are increasing in Germany. The ZARE initiative is therefore calling for uniform nationwide regulations and requirements for the disposal of used tires. "We are confident that we will receive a decision from the ministry early next year," says Christina Guth.
