Disposal of used tires: Sustainability is the order of the day

Bonn, May 26.05.2021th, 600.000 Almost XNUMX tons of old tires accumulate in Germany every year. That's a huge mountain of old tires and if you chained the tires together, the chain would go around the globe. However, professional and sustainable tire disposal and recycling is possible because used tires are a recyclable secondary raw material. The ZARE initiative is committed to resource-saving recycling of discarded tyres.

The environmentally friendly disposal of used tires is an ecological challenge that should not be underestimated. ZARE has therefore made it its task to create awareness for professional and sustainable tire recycling. Due to the changes in the cement industry, which has so far used a large part of the old tires as fuel, new ways of recycling the old tires have to be found. Used tires can e.g. B. used in pyrolysis plants to generate energy, well-preserved tires can be retreaded or exported for a second use. The majority of used tires are shredded, granulated and ground and used as recycling material from ELT (End-of-Life-Tyres) for a wide variety of products.

The reprocessing of old tires into a new recycled material is complex. The tires have to be collected, meticulously pre-sorted and transported to the appropriate further processing locations. This makes recycling more expensive, but also more environmentally friendly. Drivers who are not very responsible or even the "black sheep" in the industry avoid the costs and discard the old tires illegally. If the polluters cannot be identified, the municipalities will ultimately bear the costs for the removal. Disposal via a certified used tire disposal company is therefore the more sustainable and cost-effective way.

Environmentally friendly tire disposal is possible
In view of the challenges of climate change, awareness of sustainable action is increasing. Fortunately, more and more people are using the ZARE initiative's online inquiry form, which is available on the website https://zertified-altreifenentsorger.de/altreifen-annahme-und-verkauf/. The inquiries go directly to the ZARE partners, who, as certified waste disposal companies, accept used tires – minimum purchase of 50 tires – both used tires and used tires for cars, trucks, AS or EM. ZARE only awards companies that dispose of old tires in an environmentally friendly and professional manner. Certified waste disposal companies carefully check every tire to find the most sustainable form of recycling - from use as used tires in export countries, to tire retreading, to material and thermal recycling. Certified disposal companies comply 100 percent with the guidelines of the Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management Act (KrWG).

The ZARE initiative has developed an action package with information material for tire service companies and garages to draw attention to the environmentally conscious and professional disposal of old tires. The promotional package can be ordered on the ZARE website at https://zertisierte-alreifenentsorger.de/aktionspaket-reifenservicebetrieb/. The prerequisite for this is that the company has the waste disposed of by a certified company.

Rubber: Material with a future
The aim of ZARE is to integrate used tires completely into a functioning recycling economy, to find new and more efficient recycling methods and thus to protect the environment in the long term. A forward-looking form of recycling is the processing of old tires into rubber powder and granules. Recycled rubber can be used in the production of new and retreaded tires. Other innovative products can be made from rubber powder: rubber-modified asphalt in road construction, flooring on playgrounds and sports fields, anti-slip mats, seals, insulation and more. The areas of application are almost unlimited. A prerequisite for the resource-saving recycling of rubber is the professional disposal of old tires.

About the ZARE initiative
The ZARE initiative is an amalgamation of 19 companies organized in the Federal Association of Tire Trade and Vulcanizing Trades (BRV), 16 of which are certified waste management companies. The ZARE partners have set themselves the task of raising awareness of professional tire recycling in Germany. ZARE informs drivers about the environmentally friendly disposal of used tires. At 26 locations, the ZARE partners cover almost all of Germany and the Netherlands.

The partners of the initiative are:
