Bonn, September 21.09.2020st, XNUMX Motorists know: Tires are driven from O to O. Summer tires are the right choice from Easter to October and winter tires in the other months. The change is coming up again soon, but what actually happens to the tires that no longer have enough profile?
Almost 48 million cars are currently registered in Germany. These roll on 192 million tires and many vehicle owners regularly switch from summer to winter tires and back again. In addition, there are millions of commercial vehicles and their tires. Most of the tires are stored when they are changed for the new season, but there are also more than 580.000 tons of old tires that can no longer be used on the road because they have too little tread or are damaged.
This is not a problem for buyers at first, as the tire dealer often accepts the tires for a small fee and disposes of them. The ZARE initiative calls on dealers to dispose of used tires professionally or to recycle them. Unfortunately, there are still black sheep within the industry who dispose of tires illegally. Only profiles that are still roadworthy are often sold abroad, the rest end up in rivers, lakes or on wild dumps in nature. The risk of being caught doing this is obviously not too great. More information is also available here.
Tires can be completely reused and recycled. Whether retreading, material or thermal recycling - every tire can be put to valuable use after its first life without any problems. Dumped in nature, on the other hand, it is not only a burden on the environment, but also a burden on public coffers. Because cities and municipalities have to pay for the disposal. Companies that illegally dispose of used tires thus harm the community in several ways. Incidentally, a so-called “environmental offence” can also be classified as a criminal offense that will be prosecuted accordingly.
Specialist companies that, on the other hand, have the tires disposed of in an exemplary manner can easily and visibly differentiate themselves. When changing, drivers can be actively asked about the topic and suitable information also helps to sensitize customers to the topic.
