World Rubber Day: Old tires become new raw materials

Rubber is found in far more products than most people realize. World Rubber Day on September 12, 2026, draws attention each year to the importance of this versatile material – and to why its responsible use is becoming increasingly crucial.
World Rubber Day was established in 2009. It originated as an initiative of the specialty chemicals company LANXESS and commemorates the 100th anniversary of the invention of synthetic rubber by the German chemist Fritz Hofmann. The importance of rubber is particularly evident in the example of tires. A large proportion of the world's natural and synthetic rubber production is used in their manufacture. Modern tires consist of a variety of different rubber compounds and are designed for durability, safety, and performance. But the value of this raw material doesn't end after its use. Used tires contain high-quality materials that can be reused through appropriate recycling processes. In this way, they make an important contribution to resource conservation and the circular economy.

This is precisely where ZARE's initiative for certified used tire disposal companies comes in. The goal is to ensure that used tires are recycled as completely as possible and valuable raw materials are kept in the economic cycle. Depending on their condition, tires are either retreaded or broken down into their component parts. The recovered rubber granulate and rubber powder are used to create numerous new products – for example, impact-absorbing surfaces for playgrounds, sports flooring, elastic layers in road construction, and technical rubber products. At the same time, other components such as steel and textile fibers can be recovered and reused.

World Rubber Day serves as a reminder that rubber is an indispensable material for the economy and society. At the same time, it highlights the importance of using this valuable resource responsibly. The proper collection and recycling of used tires helps to conserve raw materials, protect natural resources, and support the transition to a functioning circular economy. ZARE, together with its certified waste management companies, is committed to ensuring that used tires don't become waste, but instead return to the material cycle as valuable raw materials. Every recycled tire helps to save resources and sustainably reduce the burden on the environment.
