In truck and bus fleets, tires determine not only safety and operational efficiency, but also environmental responsibility at the end of their life cycle. Replacing a tire ends its use on the vehicle, but not its value.
Used tires contain high-quality raw materials and durable casings. If they are professionally inspected and sorted, they can either be retreaded or recycled. This conserves resources, reduces emissions, and meets legal requirements.
ZARE ensures transparent recycling processes.
The ZARE initiative stands for controlled, environmentally sound, and legally compliant disposal of used tires in Germany. Companies that hand over their used tires to certified ZARE partners create the basis for seamless and traceable further processing.
The structured process includes:
- Testing the carcasses for retreadability
- Feeding suitable tires into further use
- Material or energy recovery of tires that are no longer usable
- Exclusion of illegal exports and improper storage
This transforms a supposed waste product into a component of the circular economy.
Renewal as an ecological and economic lever
A key recycling method is retreading. In this process, the load-bearing carcass is retained and given a new tread. Modern manufacturing processes and standardized testing procedures ensure safety and performance in commercial vehicle applications.
Besides the economic advantages, the climate impact is particularly relevant. A study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT demonstrates that the production of a retreaded commercial vehicle tire generates approximately 135 kilograms, or 63,6 percent, less CO₂ than the production of a comparable new tire. In 2024 alone, this resulted in savings of around 92.000 tons of CO₂ in Germany.
In addition, energy consumption and raw material usage decrease significantly, as existing materials continue to be used.
Strategic decision for companies
For fleet operators, choosing a certified disposal route means:
- Compliance with legal requirements
- Reducing ecological risks
- Strengthening sustainable corporate strategies
- active contribution to resource conservation
Responsible disposal of used tires is therefore not a downstream process, but part of a holistic, economically oriented sustainability concept.
Properly disposing of tires isn't about disposal – it's about enabling reuse and added value. With certified partners like ZARE, companies ensure transparent processes, reduce emissions, and strengthen the circular economy.
Sustainability begins where responsibility is taken: at the end of a tire's life cycle.
