Hamburg flies the flag for tire recycling – ZARE welcomes the city cleaning service’s action

Hamburg's daily waste: 2575 used tires, appeal for a tire recycling economy, retreading instead of throwing away, Hamburg city cleaning department.

2575 old tires – every day! This impressive figure is currently emblazoned on a Hamburg City Cleaning truck and is also an urgent appeal: According to the City Cleaning Service, this is how many old tires are generated every day in Hamburg alone – a huge waste potential that could be better utilized. ZARE expressly welcomes this high-profile campaign, as it impressively underscores the need for a functioning tire recycling system.

Under the motto “Refurbish instead of throwing away: Everything else stinks to high heaven” Hamburg's municipal cleaning service is calling on people not to dispose of tires prematurely. ZARE supports this message: Retreaded tires are an ecologically and economically viable alternative to buying new tires – especially for commercial vehicles.

Already today, many old tires can be recycled professional inspection, repair, regrooving or retreading The DBU study by the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT shows that retreading saves over 60% CO₂, two-thirds of the raw materials, and around 50% energy compared to new tire production. Tires that can no longer be reused should be material or chemical recycling – not incinerated.

The city cleaning campaign is a strong signal for waste prevention and resource conservation. ZARE calls on municipalities, waste disposal companies and the tire industryto follow this example and work together to 100% of tires in the cycle to keep.
