Another major fire demonstrates the high risk involved in storing large quantities of used tires: On the night of Sunday, February 2, 2026, a fire broke out in a barn in the Eyrichshof district of the town of Ebern (Haßberge district, Bavaria). The barn had been rented by a tire dealer for storage. According to media reports, up to 10.000 tires were stored there.
The fire department fought the blaze with a major operation. According to the report, the barn was ultimately allowed to burn down under controlled conditions, as there was no risk of the flames spreading to other buildings. This was also intended to minimize the risk of potential environmental damage as much as possible.
During the operation, one firefighter sustained minor injuries from smoke inhalation. The resulting property damage is currently estimated at around €500.000. According to reports, a 26-year-old man has already been arrested in connection with the fire on suspicion of arson and is being held in pretrial detention due to strong suspicion of the crime.
ZARE: Certified disposal protects against risks
Such incidents highlight the importance of clear standards in used tire disposal – especially when large quantities are stored. Fires in tire storage facilities are not only difficult to extinguish, but are also frequently accompanied by heavy smoke and tie up emergency services for many hours.
