Do you know what happens to your old tires?

Bonn, October 08.10.2020th, XNUMX For many drivers it is clear: Summer and winter tires are driven from O to O. Summer tires are correct from Easter to October and winter tires in the other months. Now the change is on again. What many drivers don't know: What actually happens to the old tires that no longer have enough tread?

The numbers are impressive. Almost 48 million cars are currently registered in Germany. That makes a total of 192 million tires. Almost 50 million of them are changed every year and the old tires are disposed of accordingly. Together with tires from trucks, vans and other commercial vehicles, that is around 580.000 tons per year.

Landfills may not take tires, because the tires must be properly disposed of or recycled. Drivers, as a rule, do not care what happens to the old rubber. When changing, the retailer accepts this. But does he take care of the right way? The ZARE initiative calls on dealers to dispose of old tires professionally. Every customer can also actively help with this.

As a customer, the question arises: How do I know whether my dealer will dispose of the tires properly? A first indication is provided by looking at the invoice. The price is made up of the new tyre, the removal and installation of the rubber and a disposal fee for the old tyres. If the latter is listed separately, there is a lot to be said for the tires actually being disposed of.

If only a flat rate is noted on the invoice, you can simply ask the retailer. Those who behave in an environmentally conscious manner and have tires disposed of professionally will be willing to provide information about this. A corresponding entry for disposal will also be available on the dealer's website. Because the retailer knows that he can rightly score with the topic of sustainability.

And tire recycling is not that difficult. The gummies are fully reusable and recyclable. Whether retreading, material or thermal recycling - every tire can be put to valuable use after its first life without any problems. On the other hand, if it is dumped in nature, it is not just a burden on the environment. The public coffers and thus all taxpayers are additionally burdened. Cities and municipalities have to pay for the disposal of uncontrolled dumping sites. Companies that illegally dispose of the used tires therefore harm the community in several ways.
