Special care must be taken when delivering used tires: tires must not contain batteries or battery-operated devices.
BRV, bvse, wdk and the ZARE initiative expressly point this out.
The reason: Lithium-ion batteries—for example, those found in tire pressure sensors, GPS trackers, or radio systems—can cause fires, explosions, or chemical contamination during storage or processing. This not only compromises safety but also makes high-quality recycling impossible.
ZARE therefore recommends:
- Before handing in old tires, carefully check them for embedded technology.
- Completely remove all battery-operated components.
- Avoid mixing with old appliances or other waste.
This is the only way to ensure safe and sustainable disposal.
