The fire of 2.500 used tires in Essen's northern district on New Year's Eve almost had devastating consequences. When the fire brigade arrived at around 23:48 p.m. at the hall of a business that sells used tires, the flames were already several meters high in the night sky and threatened to spread to two adjacent apartment buildings. Both were cleared by police for safety. After the fire was extinguished and no pollutants could be measured, the frightened residents were allowed back. The company could not be saved and burned down completely. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
