Bauschheim conservationists fight illegal dumping

An illegal dump containing old tires, construction debris, and weeds symbolizes the problem of illegal waste disposal in the area.

The Raunheim-Rüsselsheim city service presents frightening figures on illegal dumping of waste: In the first half of 2018, there were 148 tons of garbage dumped illegally in the countryside.
In 2010, 50 tons of illegal waste were registered. In 2017 there were 270 tons of waste and an additional 25 tons of used tires. And now it's been 148 tons in the first half of the year alone. The city service complains that the cases of illegal waste disposal have increased. The deposits have also increased. Recently, several cubic meters of rubble, bulky waste, electronic devices and old tires have been discovered. It used to be just a few rubbish bags or old tires.
Picking up the wild garbage dumps, often in the middle of the forest, is cumbersome and expensive: in 2017 it cost 200.000 euros. Ultimately, the community bears these costs.
The members of the nature and bird protection association Bauschheim (NVB) in Rüsselsheim want to do something about illegal waste disposal. Garbage has repeatedly been dumped on their premises: A few weeks ago, 135 used tires and other garbage were dumped between the "Im Schacht" and "Erslache" protected areas.
The NVB wants to work with other nature conservation associations or the city to combat illegal waste disposal. One possibility is, for example, educational work in schools, because such offenses often only happen out of thoughtlessness.
